It has recently become a hot topic that window blinds are a potential products liability because they can be a strangulation hazard. Window blinds are especially dangerous for small children. There are currently standards that protect from this products liability but they are not strong enough. p>

It was reported in the Chicago Tribune that safety regulators in Europe, Canada and the United States informed the window blinds industry that they wanted to see safety standards that would end the hazards of strangulation. There is now a concern that if the most recent proposal go through more children may die.

The most recent proposals suggest that the manufacturers of window blinds could continue to use cords in their design. It is the cord of the blind that presents the strangulation hazard to children.

It is a startling statistic that one child dies every month because they are strangled by window blinds. Sadly this number has occurred for approximately 20 years. This raises the question as to why manufacturers and window blind design companies don’t take it upon themselves to make their products safer and implement strict safety standards on their own.

Believe it or not a lot of products that present a liability to small children and babies are actually targeted for their use. One example of this is crib bumpers. They have been known to cause suffocation and in the past 20 years they have been seen as the cause of at least 28 deaths. Drop side cribs are another example.

Over 2 million drop cribs were recalled last year because they had caused babies to suffocate, fall or get stuck. It is especially upsetting that a products liability can mean that a child isn’t even safe in their own bed.

It is important to parents that they keep their children safe inside their home and out. Paying attention to any product recalls is an important part of making this happen. Staying educated on product liabilities can help save the life of your child.
